Arnold Schwarzenegger is perhaps one of the most cherished and popular action movie stars of all time. His wide frame and muscular body, combined with a peculiar sense of humor, made him a hot favorite among movie buffs. In his career as a politician as well, Schwarzenegger didn’t fail to impress those who had their eyes cast on him.
Birth and early life
Born on July 30, 1947, to Gustav Schwarzenegger and Aurelia Jadrny, his father and mother respectively, Arnold Schwarzenegger was the youngest in the family, with brother Meinhard being elder to him. Both the Schwarzenegger brothers didn’t have the best of childhoods, as their father was an alcoholic and often made the brothers fight against each other. Gustav had also made his liking for Meinhard apparent with Arnold, and even ridiculed the latter when he expressed a latent desire to make a career in bodybuilding.
However, Schwarzenegger didn’t stop pursuing his passion of body building. He took up body building seriously and did so to the extent of participating in various local weight lifting and body building championships. Films were always an obsession for Arnold, but he had no ticket out of Austria, until he met Joe Weider, the man behind the International Federation of Body Building (IFBB). This is an organization that sponsors prestigious contests such as Mr. Universe and Mr. Olympia.
Career in body building and movies
Weider took Schwarzenegger to the USA, where he would participate in various prestigious body building championships. Most notably, Arnold won an unprecedented five Mr. Universe titles and six Mr. Olympia crowns in his professional body building career, which established him as the world’s number one body builder. Movies weren’t a distant dream from here onwards.
Once Schwarzenegger had immigrated to the US in 1968, he had a major influence on development of body building as a mainstream professional sport in the country. He even starred in a documentary titled Pumping iron, which showcases his defense of the coveted Mr. Olympia crown. Come the 1980’s, and Schwarzenegger found himself as the leading figure in several action movies of the time. Prominently among these movies, were hits like Conan the Barbarian and The Terminator, which earned him a lot of commercial as well as critical acclaim.
Undoubtedly, Schwarzenegger’s most remembered and popular on screen portrayal came in 1991, in the movie Terminator 2: The Judgement Day, where he played the role of a cyborg who’s sent from the future to protect a mother-son duo from a deadly cyborg, whose only mission is to kill them. The movie became the biggest grosser of that year and escalated Arnold’s worth to greater heights.
Later in the decade, Schwarzenegger went on to do some more movies, but was pegged back because of injuries. During this time, he also had to deal with many predictions and comments being made about his health and his imminent death due to his use of steroids while body building. Schwarzenegger even filed a defamation case as retaliation and won $10,000 as compensation. His movie career began looking up once again with the success of Terminator 3: The Rise of the Machines, but he decided to foray into politics after this.
Career as Governor
As a politician, Schwarzenegger has had a considerable amount of success. He was twice elected as the Governor of California, an honor which he and his fans believe that he totally justified. Though he had to deal with some criticism in his second tenure, Schwarzenegger did do enough to improve the revenue coming in from the region of California. He also managed to set up many businesses and industrial ventures there, which held him in good stead.
After his stint in politics, Schwarzenegger reappeared in movies with The Expendables in 2010. He also appeared in The Expendables 2, with other action stars such as Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone and Jet Li. He is presently focusing on his acting career, with movies like Terminator: Genesis in the pipeline.
Though Schwarzenegger has maintained proper decorum in his public and personal life, there have been moments where he has had to hold his head down in shame. His public split with wife Maria Shriver, after revelations of him fathering a love child with their family house keeper left every one aghast. Some time later, Bridgette Nielsen, his co-star from the Red Sonja, also revealed that she and Schwarzenegger were in a full fledged relationship, even when Arnold was involved with Maria. These cases of cheating and the occasional allegations of drug abuse among other petty issues, can be said to the only thorns in Arnold's flesh.
Therefore, the above was a brief account on Arnold Schwarzenegger’s life.
