In 1971, Bahrain became an independence country by declaring its independence from the United Kingdom. It was originally a state after its independence, but became a monarchy in 2002. It is currently an Islamic state, having been one of the earliest states to adopt Islam in 628 AD.

Bahrain was one of the first countries in the Arabian Peninsula that found oil in its ground, as early as 1932. Since then, its economy has been growing rapidly. Bahrain has now tried diversifying into banking and tourism, so as to not have its economy completely depended on oil. Today, Bahrain has a high income economy and a high Human Development Index. It is also a member of the United Nations, the World Trade Organisation, the Arab League, the Non-Aligned Movement and the Organization of the Islamic Conference as well as a founding member of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf.
