Chennai Express is a Bollywood movie belonging to the multiple genres of action, drama, romance, and comedy.
Chennai Express is one of the highest grossing Bollywood films of all time. Post its release, which was on 8th August 2013, Chennai Express became only the second highest grossing Bollywood movie ever worldwide. The film has Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in lead roles, and is produced by Gauri Khan, Ronnie Screwvala and Siddharth Roy Kapur, under the banners of Red Chilies Entertainment and UTV Motion Pictures respectively.
Chennai Express recounts the story of a 40-year old bachelor Rahul Mithaiwala (Shah Rukh Khan), who is asked by his grandmother to go to Rameswaram, to immerse his deceased grandfather’s ashes. However, Rahul makes up another plan in which he and his friends decide to head to Goa instead of Rameswaram, for some unbridled joy and excitement. Conversely, Rahul ends up going to Tamil Nadu along with Meenalochini Azhugusundaram (Deepika Padukone), a Tamil girl who’s fled home, as she’s unwilling to marry the person selected by her father. Rahul helps Meena get on the train with him, but while doing so, he also helps on board the goons that were sent by Meena’s father to get her back home. The rest of the story tracks how Rahul and Meena fall in love with each other and how they overcome all odds to unite at the end.
The film was shot extensively at multiple locations in India and abroad, which included Mumbai, Goa, Panchgani, Munnar, Hyderabad, Jakarta, etc. Chennai Express, which has a running time of 141minutes created quite a buzz before its release, via innovative promotional techniques as releasing android applications and games related to the film. The soundtrack of the film as well contributed a lot to the growing anticipation regarding the movie. Songs like “1,2,3,4…” and “Titli” were already topping the charts, even before the movie had released. As additional promotion, the Chennai Express team released a bonus song featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone dancing to a peppy number, which was sung by the popular Hindi-Punjabi rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh. The song was titled “Lungi Dance – The Thalaivar Tribute”, and was an ode to Tamil superstar Rajnikanth.
Upon its release, the film broke almost all the records that were there to be broken. It collected $10 dollars within the first three days of its release itself, thereby recovering its budget as well. A month later, the figures revealed that Chennai Express was the most successful film of the year, till September 2013. However, Dhoom 3, which released in December of the same year, went on to surpass Chennai Express in terms of its revenue.
On the whole, though Chennai Express received mixed response from the critics, the producers managed to laugh all the way to their banks, with this successful outing.
