Where is Doha?
Doha is the capital city of Qatar.
Doha is a municipality within the country of Qatar. It is also the name of the capital city, which is also Qatar's largest city. In fact, the population in and around the city of Doha accounts for 60 percent of the country’s population. The term, ‘Doha’ literally means ‘the big tree’ is Arabic. The name probably comes from a big tree that stood where the fishing town was first set up.
Doha is located on the coast of the Persian Gulf. As the capital, Doha serves as the seat of government of Qatar. It is also the country’s economic center. It also has a specific area devoted to research and education, called the Education City.
Today, Doha is considered to have an important place on the international stage. It hosted the first ministerial-level meeting of the Doha Development Round of World Trade Organization negotiations. In addition, Doha hosted the 2006 Asian Games, the largest Asian Games ever held, as well as the 2011 Pan Arab Games and most of the games at the 2011 AFC Asian Cup. It also hosted the UNFCCC Climate Negotiations (COP 18) December 2012 and the 20th World Petroleum Conference in December 2011. Doha will host the 2022 FIFA World Cup as well.
