Positive thinking is a mental attitude that helps to see the bright side of things. Positivism is a state of mind, whereas the answer to being positive lies in our perspective.

When faced with setbacks and challenges, we all have received the well-meaning advice to ‘stay positive’. The greater the challenge, the more the glass-half-full wisdom can seem as unreasonable and unrealistic. It is hard to focus on the positive when the motivation to being positive seems like nothing more than wishful thinking.

Our thoughts, both good and bad, can be considered as creative and materialistic. The main difficulty is that the brain is wired to look and focus on tribulations. This leads to pessimism and negativity in our mind, thoughts and thinking.  This is just one of the main reasons for a person to stay and think positively. A positive mindset can transform an aggressive conversation into an opportunity to practice patience. However, positive thoughts are not enough. One must live them out and apply them in their life.

Positive thinking is a mental attitude that helps to see the bright side of things. A positive mind anticipates happiness, joy, health, and favorable results. Research has demonstrated that positive thinking can have a variety of benefits, from improving your self-confidence and psychological well-being to actually boosting your physical health. Even if you are not a natural-born optimist, there are things you can do to develop your positive thinking skills and reap some of the benefits of positive thinking.

Here are a few ideas on how to be a positive person:

  • In order to be a positive thinker, you need to learn how to really analyze your thoughts. As negative thinking presents a major obstacle, identifying such thoughts is the first step in overcoming them.
  • Avoid negative influences. The friends we surround ourselves with can have an overwhelming impact on our outlooks both good and bad. Do only what you feel comfortable with. Learn to say "no" to things we know we don't want to do.
  • Replace negative thoughts with positive ones. Look for a bright side in every situation. There are surprising benefits within them. If done long enough, it becomes habitual and makes a tremendous difference in improving our positive thinking skills. Say "I can!" more than "I can't!" Remember, everything can be framed positively; make a relentless effort to do so.
  • Use your imagination to visualize only favorable and beneficial situations.
  • Use positive words in your inner dialogues, or when talking with others.
  • Smile a little more, as this helps to think positively.
  • In case you feel inner resistance and difficulties when replacing negative thoughts with positive ones, do not give up, but keep looking only at the beneficial, good and happy thoughts in your mind.
  • It doesn't matter what the given circumstances are at the present moment. Think positively, expect only favorable results and situations, and circumstances will change accordingly. If you persevere, you will transform the way your mind thinks. It might take some time for the changes to take place, but eventually they will.
