Meaning of Bismil

Bismil means “wounded” or “sacrificed.”

The word Bismil is an Urdu word, which roughly translates into “wounded” or “sacrificed.” The work has been made recently popular by a song, titled “Aye Bulbul e Bismil,” from the Bollywood movie Haider. The movie Haider is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

The “Aye Bulbul e Bismil” goes like:

Bismil bismil
bulbul-e-bismil
mat mil mat mil
gul se mat mil

This translates into

“O wounded nightingale, wounded one
Don’t meet the flower…”

Bismil is also the name of a district located in the Diyarbakir Province of Turkey. It is believed that the word “Bismil” comes from “Bismillah,” which means “to begin in name of God.”
