The purpose of the internet was to allow people to share information. Hence it is no surprise that it gave rise to the culture of blogging. There are currently millions of blogs online today. But what are these blogs and why are they so popular?
A blog is basically a website, but this website must be regularly updated. It must have posts, which are entries discussing something or providing some kind of information, etc. These posts are generally shown in a reverse-chronological order with the most recent posts shown first.
The content of these posts can be regarding anything, such personal opinions, activities, and experiences, which is often written in an informal or conversational style. The posts can even be news, celebrity news and sightings, etc. Many blogs are often used as a personal journal or diary.
The blog can be run by a single person, or by a single group. Nowaday, many “multi-author blogs” (MABs) have also shown up. Here, the posts are written by large numbers of authors and professionally edited, similar to a print magazine or a newspaper.
There has also been a growth in the popularity of micro-blogging websites. Prime examples of this would be Twitter and Tumblr, which are currently the most popular micro-blogging websites. These blogs allow a user to post short posts on their website.
