In the basis sense of the word, the term ‘Debut’ refers to the beginning of something new. It comes from the Middle French, ‘débuter’, which means to move or begin.
Usually, debut refers to the beginning of an acting career or performance career. Hence it is often used to refer to the first time a performer performs for the public. It refers to a person’s first appearance or performance in a particular capacity or role, whether they are an actor, dancer, model or director.
Debut can also refer to the launch of a new product, e.g. the company debuted it new plan. It can also refer to the beginning of a course of action, such as the debut of a new foreign policy.
In the olden days, debut referred to the moment when a young lady was presented to society. This is also why she was called a debutante.
