Meaning of Gayatri Mantra
Gayatri mantra is a famous Sanskrit mantra (prayer) which consists of twenty-four syllables, three lines of eight syllables each.

Gayatri Mantra is a divine prayer in the Sanskrit language. It is concerned with the inner mental stability of an individual. Its each syllable comprises of a valued meaning.

In Sanskrit it is:

ॐ भूर्भुव: स्व: तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं । भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि, धीयो यो न: प्रचोदयात् ।।

Translated as:

Aum Bhur Bhuvah Swah, Tat Savitur Varenyam

Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi, Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat

The main syllable depicts the meaning as:

  • AUM (ॐ): the word reflects the Supreme name of God.
  • BHUR BHUVAH SWAH (भूर्भुव: स्व:): these three words collectively are known as the “Mahavyahriti”. They express the nature of God and demonstrate his inherent qualities.
  • BHUR (भूर्): the word Bhur implies existence of God.
  • BHUVAH (भुव:): the word describes the absolute Consciousness of God.
  • SWAH (स्व:): indicates the all-pervading nature of God.

Gayatri Mantra originates from Goddess Gayatri, who is also called "Veda-Mata" or the Mother of the Vedas - Rig, Yajur, Saam and Atharva - because it is the very basis of the Vedas. The mantra is the oldest prayer followed right from the historic periods.

Its meaning reflects the existence and belief in god. It conveys the duties of God towards his dear ones. God is a self-existent power, which is free from all the sorrows and pains. God (the almighty) will free the individual’s sorrow from all his problems and difficulties. He is there to guide us in every part of life, as we strive for success. He is the real creator and energizer of the universe, so he will look after everything. He is pure and will not allow to impure any of the mighty deeds. So, God is there, and always will be there, to look after everyone, in order guide us on the right path of life.

Gayatri Mantra forms the basic pillar in the field of Yoga and its study. This mantra is practiced as a ritual prayer to recollect the existence of the Almighty. Nowadays, it has gained importance in the field of yoga, it stabilizes the inner mind and control one’s sole. It has proved to be efficient in gaining the stability of mind and also during the treatment of some disease.
