Meaning of Salaam Alaikum

Whenever people meet each other, it is customary to offer a greeting. This could be “Hello” or “Salaam Alaikum”. Salaam Alaikum is an Arabic greeting that is commonly used by Muslims. The literal translation of Salaam Alaikum is “peace to you.”

The official greeting is “As-salamu alaykum”, however these days it often shortened to “Salaam Alaikum”. The greeting can be used as “hello”, “hi”, “good day”, “goodbye” or “farewell.” An informal way of greeting is the further shortened “Salaam”.

When greeted with “Salaam Alaikum”, the official response would be “Wa alaykumu s-salam,” which translates to “And unto you peace”.
