Meaning of the Hood

The hood is a slang that got very popular in the 1990s and is still in use to day. It basically refers to ghetto. It may also be written as ‘Da Hood.’ A ghetto is basically a part of a city in which members of a minority group live, usually due to social, legal, or economic pressure. It is a lower-class and lower income neighborhood.

It can also be used to refer to someone who is originally from a ghetto. For example: “you’re from the hood?”

It can also refer to someone who is not from the hood but certainly acts like they are from the ghetto.

Nowadays, it is also used to refer to any neighborhood. “I’ma visit my hood.” This is in reference to the neighborhood that I am actually from. It may or may not be a ghetto, it may even be a suburban neighborhood with white picket fence.

The term may also be used to refer to the hood of a jacket, i.e. the piece of cloth intended for covering the head.
