Meaning of Unisex

Unisex means something that is not gender specific.

The term unisex is often used to denote something that can be utilized by some one of both sexes, which means that it can be used by either a man or a woman. Unisex means something that is not gender specific, something that can be used by both sexes.

Traditionally, the prefix ‘uni-’ means one or singular. However, in this case, unisex means something that can be used by both sexes. The reason for this is that the term, unisex was developed during the 1960, which is quite contemporary. Also the word was used quite informally, due to which, the developers of the words might not have looked to the Latin prefix as inspiration, rather to other words that were already popular like united and universal, where the prefix uni- takes on the sense of shared. Hence, unisex mean one thing that can be shared by both sexes.

Some examples of unisex items, are unisex clothing, unisex salons, unisex bathrooms, unisex pools, unisex name, etc. Unisex is also commonly referred to as mixed, as in mixed school, mixed bathing, etc.
