Silicon Valley is the name coined for the southern bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area in Northern California, United States.
The term Silicon Valley today is synonymous with many multi million dollar technological corporations such as Apple Inc., Facebook, Microsoft, Yahoo!, etc. Silicon Valley is not actually a geographical location, but a metonym for the place where these tech companies have their headquarters. A metonym is a word, name, or expression used as a substitute for something else with which it is closely associated. Silicon Valley has earned its name from the fact that there are many silicon chip developer and manufacturers in the region.
To zero in on its geographical location, Silicon Valley constitutes the southern bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area in Northern California, United States. It is approximately spread out in the same area as the Santa Clara Valley, which is also its central location. The valley also includes surrounding towns such as Sunnyvale, Palo Alto, San Jose, Saratoga, Cupertino, Mountain View, etc. There are also various bay area cities in the different counties of the state of California, which have come to be associated with the Silicon Valley, because many other technological or venture capital firms have set up their businesses in the location. These cities include: Belmont, Oakland, Menlo Park, Redwood City, Newark, etc.
Apart from the fact that many silicon chip creators made this place their home, many high-end computing technologies have also been churned out of the Silicon Valley. Most notably, the Microprocessor technology was developed in the Silicon Valley. Besides these technological innovations, Silicon Valley firms and the experts employed by them are responsible for inventing many other gadgets and electronics, which have made human life easier. For instance, two Silicon Valley tech wizards named Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore invented the semiconductor technology, which many companies went on to use in their computer parts, programming and services. More interestingly, Noyce and Moore later formed Intel Corporation, which itself is one of the biggies in the valley today.
Other than these inventions, the mouse, and some of the hypertext computer-association tools have been contributed by the Silicon Valley giants. Of late, many social networking websites such as Facebook, have made the Silicon Valley as their home. Currently, the companies within the valley are an exciting mix of hardware and software providers that also work in tandem to provide more logical solutions to the basic problems encountered by mankind. According to the figures revealed by various statistical surveys and reports, the Silicon Valley area of America has emerged as the place holding the highest-paying information technology jobs in the nation, and perhaps the world.
