YouTube: YouTube is a video sharing website.
What is YouTube?
YouTube is a video sharing website that allows users to upload their videos to the site. The user has the choice of making the video Public, Private or open to select viewers. People can then come to the site and view those videos that are open to them or the public in general.
The website has gotten quite popular for sharing personal videos, family videos, product reviews and even vlogs. YouTube has a variety of different videos, including learning videos, entertainment, comedy, action, music, marketing and much more.
When was YouTube started?
YouTube was founded by three former PayPal employees in February 2005. These ex-employees were Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim. According to Karim, the story goes like this: the inspiration for the idea of a video-sharing website came up when Karim could not find a clip of Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction at the 2004 Super Bowl.
YouTube and Google?
Youtube was founded by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim. Their project start-up was backed by Sequoia Capital. They invested $11.5 million in the venture between November 2005 and April 2006. In October 2006, Google Inc. announced that it had acquired YouTube for $1.65 billion in Google stock. The deal was finalized on November 13, 2006. Since then, YouTube had been a subsidiary of Google. In fact, the main source of revenue for YouTube are the Google Ads running on the site.
How popular is YouTube?
The entire idea behind YouTube is the ability to share one’s own videos with the world. The website was supposed to be launched in November 2005. However, the site became live in May 2005, as part of beta testing. By July 2006, the website was getting 100 million video views per day and more than 65,000 new videos were being uploaded to the site daily. This was a little over a year that the website had been live.
At the time of YouTube’s launch, practically no marketing was employed. YouTube’s first users arrived mainly because of word of mouth. This fact comments of the quality of the product.
In May 2010, YouTube had a market share of around 43% among online video providers. In that month, YouTube was streaming more than two billion videos a day. By May 2011, that number had risen to three billion a day. In January 2012, YouTube stated that it was streaming four billion videos per day.
What are some of the negative aspects of YouTube?
As users can upload any and all content on to YouTube, there have been some concerns of copyright. Users have been known to upload movies, episodes of TV shows, music videos, etc. YouTube now ensures that any videos that infringe on the copyright of others will be and are removed from the site. In addition, the user who uploaded the copyrited video, will receive one strike against his account. If the user does not get another strike within 6 months of the previous strike, then no further action will be taken against him or her.
Another concern was improper, anti-religious or porographic videos being uploaded by some users. These videos can be reported to YouTube by the viewers. YouTube will then delete the videos and may even block the user or take action against the user as deemed necessary. Due to these concerns, YouTube has faced a ban on the site from certain countries.
Youtube has also faced some accusations of facilitating cyber-bullying in the past. However, these cases are dependend more on the users than the site itself.
